Pyramiden, Spitsbergen, Svalbard and Jan Mayen Islands, Norway: Pyramiden is an abandoned Soviet coal mining settlement. Founded by Sweden in 1910 and sold to the Soviet Union in 1927, it was developed into a model socialist community, featuring a cultural center, sports complex, school, and a 24-hour canteen. At its peak in the 1980s, the town housed over 1,000 residents, primarily Russian and Ukrainian miners and their families. However, due to economic difficulties following the collapse of the Soviet Union and a significant air disaster in 1996, mining operations ceased, and the settlement was largely abandoned in 1998. The harsh Arctic climate has remarkably preserved much of its infrastructure and interiors, leaving it as a well-preserved time capsule of Soviet-era life. Since 2007, efforts have been made to develop Pyramiden as a tourist destination, with its hotel renovated and caretakers maintaining the site. Visitors can explore the ghost town, observing its abandoned buildings and the northernmost monument to Vladimir Lenin.

King Haakon Bay is named after King Haakon VII of Norway. It's the only landing site and rarely visited on the western coast of South Georgia by expedition cruise. It's worth to visit given its beauty and rich history - should the weather allow.
