This is an image belonging to what we can consider a chapter of twentieth-century Italian publishing: the “Albi di Novissima” and the “Quaderni di Novissima”, created by the Florentine entrepreneur Edoardo de Fonseca and his son Giorgio. In 1901, Edoardo founded the precious annual magazine “Novissima. Albo d'Arti e Lettere” which published texts and illustrations by many famous writers such as Pascoli, Giacosa, De Amicis, Martini, Capuana, Marradi, Di Giacomo, Rovetta, Fucini, Ricci, Biagi, Gargàno, Sodini, Rasi, and painters such as Giorgio Kienerk, Aleardo Terzi, Duilio Cambellotti, Plinio Nomellini, Metlicovitz or Hohenstein for example, while Giorgio, in the 1930s, created, in collaboration with the famous poet Giuseppe Ungaretti and the journalist Rafaele Contu, an important book series called “Quaderni di Novissima”. This collection contains numerous works by important Italian and foreign writers.
These playing cards show in caricature a well-known person from the Victorian era in Great Britain. The characters who are lampooned and the dated style of the illustrations suggest that they were drawn in around 1880. In this case the character is Charles Darwin in his later years. Darwinism Charles Darwin (1809 - 1882). On the Origin of Species was first published in 1859, bt Darwin's theory was continually held up to ridicule at this time. There is a monkey in the background. This game is attributed to games manufacturer Multum In Parvo ('much in a small space'). The company formed in the 1890s at 144 Falkland Road, Hornsey, London, N8. In 1931 the company was liquidated following almost continuous financial difficulties throughout the 1920s.
