Asbolus verrucosus (Blue Armored Desert Beetle)This species is related to the well-known Tenebrio molitor and Zophoba morio. They are robust-looking beetles with a bluish or dusty grayish color (due to a waxy coating they secrete to protect themselves from the desert sun and preserve humidity). When they get wet they acquire a blackish color (their true hue in reality). They have characteristic rough elytra. Its legs are robust and of the same color as the rest of the body. Its thorax is slightly flattened.

Giant black water beetle (Hydrophilus triangularis) is a large aquatic-dwelling beetle. Commonly seen across the continental US it needs fresh water to reproduce, and prefer to dwell in large, deep ponds. They scavenge on decaying plant material and detritus in fresh bodies of water. In addition to scavenging plant material, adults also prey on smaller aquatic insects, small fish, and snails. These beetles have a characteristic all black or brown-black elongated and narrow body. It usually grows up to 40 mm.
