Istanbul / Constantinople, Eastern Thrace, Turkey: the Hagia Sophia is an architectural monument of significant historical and cultural importance. Originally constructed as a cathedral in 537 CE during the reign of Byzantine Emperor Justinian I, it served as the center of Eastern Orthodox Christianity for nearly a thousand years. After the Ottoman occupation of Constantinople in 1453, it was converted into a mosque, reflecting the city's transition to Islamic rule. In 1935, it was secularized, being reconverted into a mosque in 2020. Its design, characterized by a massive central dome and a blend of Byzantine and Islamic architectural elements, continues to be studied and admired for its engineering and aesthetic achievements.
