Tot 33-37mm, Ab 23-25mm, Hw 29-32mm.Large, broad, club-tailed species, Males often perch on lilypads. They are dark, marked with white highlights on the face, waist and at the tips of the wings and abdomen. This makes identification through binoculars easy.Behavior:Both sexes fly actively over open water, frequently resting on floating vegetation (Nuphar, Nymphaea, Potamogeton), where mating may also take place. Male often raises clubbed tail.Occurrence:Occurrence is scattered and populations are normally rather small. May be abundant locally.Habitat:Pools and lakes with moderate nutrient levels and rich aquatic vegetation.Flight Season: Mid May to early August; most abundant in June.This Picture is made in the Weeribben (Overijssel, the Netherlands) in mid June of 2025.

Southern state freshwater wetland forest on a sunny evening in summer (July). The image was captured in Big Creek, Forsyth, (near Cumming) in Georgia (USA) with a full frame mirrorless digital camera and a sharp telephoto lens. The image is part of a large series of Georgia wetland. Most of the images were shot at 200mm and maximum aperture f/2.8 creating a very shallow depth of field resulting in defocused spaces suitable  for copy/text.
The black-winged dragonfly belongs to the family of dragonflies, a very primitive insect. It is distributed in Henan, Shandong, Anhui, Jiangsu, Fujian, Zhejiang, Guangdong, Guangxi, etc. The face is dark and hairy. Except for the slightly lighter base color of the front lip, the rest of the body and the top of the head are all blue-green or blue-brown with a metallic luster. The back of the head is brown, with hair on the rear edge. The prothorax is black. The front of the sternum is blue-green with thick hair, and the side of the sternum is dark green with sparse hair. Most of the wings are black with blue-green flashes, and a small part is transparent. The hind wings are black; the area from the base of the wing to the end of the wing knot and the end of the elbow vein of the forewing is black, with a small black spot at the end of the wing, and the rest is transparent and colorless. The legs are black. The abdomen and anal appendages are all black [1].

Tot 32-39mm, Ab 23-27mm, Hw 30-33mm.The largest whiteface and the prevailing one in many lowland and more eutrophic areas, although almost always very local. The conspicuous yellow spot on S7 identifies males and most females through binoculars.Occurrence:Generally uncommon; populations are usually local and small. The most thermophilus Leucorrhinia, with a relative southern range.Habitat:Generally inhabits less acidic and nutrient poor places than L. dubia and L. rubicunda, preferring marshy borders to bogs, forest lakes, fenlands, marshy ditches.Vegetation is typically lush and varied, with both emergent and submerged species. The water is frequently mesotrophic and often colored brown due to peat.Flight Season:From early May to early August, with most records in late May and June.This Picture is made in the Wieden (Overijssel, the Netherlands) in mid June of 2023.
