Field characters: 66-84mm, abdomen: 50-61mm, Hw: 45-52mm.\nBlue Emperor is presently a common species, which is only absent from parts of the northern provinces of Groningen and Friesland. It is found at most larger bodies of standing water. Compared to the pre-1990 period, the species has increased strongly. Tot 35-39mm, Ab 25-33mm, Hw 17-24mm. Average size and build for a Spreadwing.\n\nThe most widespread and numerous Lestes in many areas, probably because it is less partial to ephemeral habitats.\n\nOccurrence:\nOne of the commonest damselflies in most of Northern Europe across to japan, but (largely) absent from most of the south.\n\nHabitat:\nAlmost any standing water with ample reed-like vegetation. May be more numerous at recent shallow or acidic sites, but not specific  to pioneer, ephemeral or bog-like conditions.\n\nFlight Season:\nGenerally from mid-May to mid-October, peaking in August. Most emergence tends to be a week later than L. dryas.\n\nThis is a common Species in the Netherlands in the described Habitats.

Copper Demoiselle (Calopteryx haemorrhoidalis) damselfly resting on a green grass leaf
This 'streamside butterfly' is our most familiar riverine Odonate. It is a variable species and numerous forms have been named.\nTotal length: 45-48mm, abdomen 33-44mm, hind wing  27-36mm. This is the largest damselfly of this Group. Males are metallic blue with a dark blue band across each wing. Females have metallic green body and veins, clear greenish wings and usually a white pseudopterostigma.\nHabitat: Most (partially) open running waters, avoiding cold torrents, high mountains and deep shade, and is scarce on large waters.\nDistribution: Common species in most parts of (Central) Europe, except N Scandinavia and the Iberian Peninsula.\nFlight Season: May-August.\n\nThis beautiful Insect is flying along streaming Brooks (open running Waters) and is quite common in the Netherlands. The Males defend Territories and the Courtship Behaviour is quite extended and exclusive.
