The Black-Winged Stilt is a widely distributed long-legged wader. They are commonly found in wetlands with open shallow water, often in brackish habitats.

A resident and widespread species, Black-winged Stilts can be found both on the coast and inland on any wadeable pond, lake, marsh or stream.

$Measures 38 centimeters long. Adults have long pink legs, a long black beak and an extensive white stripe that extends across the lower abdomen, neck and part of the head, which has a black upper part, as well as the nape and back. The legs alone measure around 16 cm and, when the bird flies, they are arranged longitudinally in relation to the body. It has habits and behaviors similar to those of the white-backed stilt (Himantopus melanurus), from which it differs in its black back.\nAccording to Hayman et al. (1986), is a species that presents sexual dimorphism. The adult male has a uniform black mantle and wings. The adult female has a brownish mantle and back, contrasting with the black of her neck.$
