Early afternoon, after a storm the visibility is reduced to some 5 or 6m. That means: a lot of nutrition in the water, the Gorgonians like that and so the polyps are extended, the lunch is ready! Palau, Micronesia, 7°10'33.499\
The Red Sea, Egypt, is famous for its vibrant soft corals, which create some of the most stunning underwater landscapes. Unlike hard corals, soft corals are flexible, swaying gracefully with the currents, adding a dynamic beauty to the reef. These corals, such as Dendronephthya and Sinularia, come in a range of colors, including brilliant pinks, purples, oranges, and yellows, making the Red Sea’s reefs a kaleidoscope of life.\n\nSoft corals are found in both shallow and deeper waters, thriving in the warm, clear conditions of the Red Sea. They provide vital habitat for a variety of marine life, including small fish, invertebrates, and other reef organisms, offering shelter and feeding grounds. Their soft, intricate structures also help protect the reef by contributing to the biodiversity that supports the entire ecosystem.\n\nThe soft corals of the Red Sea are often seen alongside schools of colorful fish, creating a mesmerizing and tranquil underwater scene. Popular dive sites like Ras Mohammed National Park, Elphinstone Reef, and Tiran Island are known for their stunning coral gardens. For divers and snorkelers, the Red Sea’s soft corals offer an unforgettable experience, showcasing the beauty and diversity of marine life.

Detail of Gorgonian Sea Fan. Soft corals and gorgonians are sessile, they cannot hide or run away from predators or space competitor. \nInstead, they produce a range of chemical substances, which effectively deter predators, prevent overgrowth by neighbours or fouling organisms. \nThe term «sea fan» is generally used as an alternative for «gorgonian», which are Octocorallia with a fan-shaped morphology, contrasting them with unbranched species, which they generally call «sea whips». \nIn science there is no distinct dividing line between soft corals and gorgonians. \nTriton Bay, Indonesia \n3°54'52.062 S 134°7'21.384 E at 10m depth

In the tropical Indo-West Pacific from Tanzania to Japan, Australia and Kiribati in a depth range from 4 to 25m, max. length 15mm. The shrimp maintains a commensal relationship with feather stars, meaning it benefits by receiving protection and feeding opportunities from organic particles the feather star captures, while the feather star is unaffected by its presence. The shrimp primarily scavenges on the bits of organic debris or plankton caught by the feather star's feeding structures. \nPontoniopsis comanthi is known to be associated with crinoid species of Comanthus, Comatula, Heterometra, Lamprometra and Tropiometra. \nLembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia \n1°28'56.394 N 125°15'15.588 E at 8m depth
