$Commensal Emperor Shrimp or Imperial Shrimp Zenopontonia rex (ex. Periclimenes imperator) occurs in the tropical Indo-Pacific from the Red Sea, Réunion and Mayotte to Hawaii and French Polynesia, and from southern Japan to New Caledonia and northern Australia in a depth range from 1 to 40m, max. length 3cm. The species is always living in association with a large sea cucumber, a nudibranch or other large mollusc, perching on its back as its host moves around. \nThere is often a pair of shrimps, or even three, on a single host, and then they usually have identical colouring. The colouring also varies depending on the shrimp's host; the classic colouring usually occurs when it is associated with a sea cucumber. \nZenopontonia rex keeps to the dorsal surface or flanks, moving to the far side of the host if danger threatens.The shrimp feeds on detritus on the seabed, as well as cleaning the surface of its host and feeding on mucus and faeces.\nThis specimen was encountered at a Sea Cucumber Bohadschia sp. in the Lembeh Strait, North Sulawesi, Indonesia\n1°29'33.414 N 125°15'40.446 E at 10m depth$

$This shrimp species has many common names like Graceful Anemone Shrimp, Beautiful Transparent Shrimp, Beautiful Cleaner Shrimp and a new scientific name: Ancylomenes venustus (former Periclimenes venustus). It occurs in the tropical Indo-West Pacific to Papua New Guinea and Japan. \nReliable depth range information is hard to find. The often quoted 8 to 15 m is certainly not correct, I have already clearly encountered this species much deeper (here at 23m). 0-35m seems more plausible. \nThe max. length is 3cm, common 2.5cm. \nThe species lives in association with hard corals and sea anemones and is a cleaner shrimp. \nThis specimen on a Merten's Sea Anemone Stichodactyla mertensii is a female. If you look at the photo in full size, you can clearly see details in the eggs: the segmented bodies of these next generation crustaceans are clearly visible. \nLembeh strait, Indonesia \n1°28'55.728 N 125°14'17.256 E at 23m depth$
