Northumberland, England. The Sycamore Gap on Hadrian's Wall before the deliberate felling of the iconic sycamore tree by vandals on 28 September 2023.

One of the most famous points on Hadrian’s Wall is Sycamore Gap, where a beautiful sycamore tree has withstood the rigours of the Northumberland weather for many years. On either side of the gap, the wall climbs steeply up the crest of the Whin Sill, a tabular layer of igneous dolerite rock in the north east of England. This was once the most heavily fortified border in the Roman Empire, and dates from AD 122, during the rule of the emperor Hadrian. The wall was made a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1987.

$Hadrian's Wall, also known as the Roman Wall, Picts' Wall, or Vallum Hadriani in Latin, is a former defensive fortification of the Roman province of Britannia, begun in AD 122 in the reign of the Emperor Hadrian. \n\nRunning from Wallsend on the River Tyne in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west of what is now northern England, it was a stone wall with large ditches in front of it and behind it that crossed the whole width of the island. Soldiers were garrisoned along the line of the wall in large forts, smaller milecastles and intervening turrets.$
