Beach Spring, located in Yellowstone National Park’s Upper Geyser Basin, is captured just moments before erupting, with bubbling geothermal waters washing over mineral sinter deposits in waves reminiscent of a beach. This dynamic spring exemplifies the geothermal activity that defines the Upper Geyser Basin—home to the highest concentration of geysers and hot springs in the world.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, USA: Old Faithful is a cone geyser located in Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming, renowned for its relatively predictable eruption pattern that occurs approximately every 90 minutes, though intervals can range from 60 to 110 minutes depending on the duration of the previous eruption. The geyser shoots a column of boiling water to heights averaging 130-140 feet (40-43 meters), with eruptions lasting between 1.5 to 5 minutes and expelling 3,700 to 8,400 gallons (14,000 to 32,000 liters) of water. Named during the 1870 Washburn Expedition for its consistent activity, Old Faithful is powered by underground thermal features where superheated water under pressure periodically flashes to steam, creating the eruption cycle. As one of more than 500 geysers in Yellowstone—which contains over half of the world's geysers—Old Faithful has been erupting in its current pattern for hundreds of years, making it one of the park's most studied and visited thermal features, with its activity carefully monitored and predicted by the National Park Service based on the duration and strength of each eruption.

Yellowstone National Park, Wyoming USA: Silex Spring, located in the Fountain Paint Pot area of Yellowstone National Park's Lower Geyser Basin, is a hot spring named for the Latin term for silica, reflecting the significant sinter deposits formed as superheated groundwater dissolves silica from underlying volcanic rocks and precipitates it around the pool and along runoff channels. The spring features clear, blue water with an average temperature of 174.7°F (79.3°C) and a pH of 8.4, where thermophiles are limited due to the heat, but the overflowing water creates cooler habitats supporting colorful microbial mats that form the base of a food web for flies, mites, spiders, and birds. Although primarily a perpetual hot spring that overflows year-round, it has functioned sporadically as a geyser.
